Reviews for A Strange Path to Freedom

“No, this is not about Martha Stewart (although I would love to talk to her at some point) … but about another woman’s journey through the justice system and how she made the most of it.

There is no shortage of books on white collar crime, most of which make for better case studies than full-length books.  So, I was intrigued when I set out to read Holly Pasut’s account of her path to prison and how it set her free.

First, I’m not getting into the depths of a Pasut’s case here, but safe to say that the it is so complex that most would struggle to figure out exactly what she did wrong.  Pasut was a nationally recognized real estate agent in Charlotte, NC beginning in the late90’s throughout the boom of 2007.  Then came the crash and the beginning of one of the biggest investigations into mortgage fraud in the country, Operation Wax House, which led to the arrest of nearly 100 people.  One of whom was Holly Pasut….”

“Wow! I loved this book! Holly’s story is filled with courage and inspiration. She is an overcomer and I really admire her strength, positive attitude and commitment to finding meaning and understanding in the cards she was dealt. I enjoyed reading the creative and inspirational ways she got through each day with insight and humor.

Holly has had some large hurdles in life, but instead of feeling sorry for herself, she does what ever it takes to come through it a better person. She took a bad situation and learned so many amazing things about life, herself, her relationship with her family, all while focusing on God. Her strange path to freedom was so refreshing to read. We all need to be more open and honest about our fears and flaws. Being real with ourselves and others breaks down the walls and Holly blew through a few walls and found her strange path to freedom. Thanks for inspiring me to be a better person, to be more vulnerable and open, embracing all of me (the good, bad and ugly) and living life to its fullest. For when I am weak, I am strong! Thanks for sharing, Holly! I hope there’s a Part II!”

“Oh my goodness, what a colorful read! Go ahead, I dare you, take a ride on the author’s shoulder. Get ready for a heartwarming, true journey about how Uncle Sam drug a single mother through a judicial swamp and her brave climb back to freedom. Her writing style is bold, courageously honest, casual, and hilarious. You’ll belly laugh to the last page. This is one book that I wanted to go on and on. Hopefully she’ll follow up with a sequel soon.”

“This is a quick read with a little humor added in that helps balance such a difficult time. Holly manages to find the “light” in going to prison and in doing so broadens her own faith. Her dreams, deep thoughts and faith that shines around others is not only uplifting ,but truly remarkable!! You finish the book wanting more of what life is truly about.”

“Holly Pasut’s personal account of her time spent in federal prison reveals much more than the daily life of a white-collar, professional inmate. Using wit, humor, solemnity and spiritual references, her story challenges readers to examine their own lives, explore other perspectives, and be optimistic and less judgmental. After all, some of us create our own prisons in life.”

“When I found out Holly had written a book I bought it right away. It was a book I couldn’t put down even though it was a white collar crime I didn’t realize all that went on In prison and Holly described it in a way we all could relate to by making a simple mistake by saying yes instead of no.”

“Holly did a phenomenal job! I do not like to sit still and read, but I could not put this book down! She had me crying in the beginning and laughing on and off throughout. Most importantly, she had me thinking about how to make my life better!! Thank you for sharing your story!”

“A well written book how challege can become one’s victory. I couldn’t put this book down and it is a story everyone can apply to their own lives. Well done Holly! Loved it! My mom reads it next!”

“The preface alone grabbed me. The emotion was palpable. It was apparent that Holly was willing to bare her soul. With great anticipation, I started to read the book. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. I did not have to remind myself that this was a true crime book as despite the humor, and there was lots of it, the reality was that this book was not a work of fiction. It was written by a woman who had committed a crime and done her time and she was now telling her story…all of it without leaving anything out.

I am a college professor specializing in fraud. I have been an expert witness in fraud cases for many years. I have met with fraudsters, both high profile and “regular.” I have read their stories, watched their videos and gotten to know some of them quite well. It takes a lot to move me…Holly’s book managed to do so. You do not have to feel sorry for her as she is not asking you to do so. But at some point in your life you may find yourself in a situation where her book/story will remind you to take the right path. If nothing else, this alone makes the book worth reading. The bonus is that despite her circumstances, Holly has managed to write a book that may very well make you laugh out loud. Yes, she made a mistake. But she served her time and I believe that she has proven that she deserves a second chance.”

“What an inspiration. An easy read that will challenge you to be real, transparent, and honest with all that life brings your way. Holly reminds us that choices matter. Good choices and bad choices bring to a place that we cannot avoid. Her reminder that God is always there for us is a great reminder from the Bible itself. I learned that sometimes we truly find ourselves in our worst place. Holly opens ones eyes to being one that listens without judgement. Why? Because every book has a story inside. We like books have a story inside. Highly recommend this book.”
